Background and objective: The increasing trend of population growth in the current century as well as limited growth of animal resources has led to imbalance of supply and demand. Therefore, the low availability of protein, especially in developing countries, resulted in high cost of animal protein. Animal sources could provide 30% of daily needs, and other requirements should be provided by plant proteins. Protein supply from halal sources is important in the growing population of Muslims in the world. This study has reviewed the plant sources with high quality protein to meet people's daily need.
Results and conclusion: Currently, the proteins extracted from fruit waste, especially the kernel, are used for food enrichment due to their beneficial properties. In this regard, kernel and seed of grapefruit, orange, pomegranate, grape, and date have essential and non-essential amino acids for the body, and contain a variety of antioxidants and minerals such as copper and zinc. Use of such waste materials is of great importance in food industry and also food chain so that it helps to reduce the environmental pollution. What is important is that there is no concern for Muslims about halal status of protein when it is extracted from plant sources.
