Objective: One of the earliest behaviors of humankind in the natural world has been the utilization of its resources. From the perspective of Islamic jurisprudence, the exploitation of nature and other creatures is permissible only under certain conditions and rulings. Among these, specific instructions and regulations have been prescribed regarding the use of animals. Accordingly, this study seeks to examine the rights of animals—particularly lawful quadrupeds—and to clarify the main instances of their utilization from the viewpoint of Islamic teachings.
Materials and Methods: This research has been conducted using a descriptive–analytical approach, based on the study of Islamic sources, especially hadith texts.
Findings: Although Almighty God has subjugated all creatures for humankind, excess and transgression in this regard are prohibited. All animals possess certain rights that humans are obliged to respect while benefiting from them. Numerous narrations from the Prophet (PBUH) and the Infallible Imams (AS) emphasize that Islam forbids cruelty toward animals and their unjustified killing, while holding humans accountable for their treatment. The examples of animal rights presented in this study are but a few instances from Islamic jurisprudential sources, where the sacred law has addressed their rights with remarkable clarity and precision.
Conclusion: The findings reveal that although God Almighty has subjected all creatures to humans, Islamic jurisprudence stresses rational utilization accompanied by observance of animal rights. Animals—especially lawful quadrupeds—are entitled to rights such as the right to life, provision of sustenance, protection from cruelty, and legitimate utilization, while any form of excess or abuse is forbidden. Based on Qur’anic verses and narrations of the Infallibles (AS), humans are duty-bound to observe their ethical and religious responsibilities toward animals while benefiting from them. The articulation of these rights and instances exemplifies the comprehensiveness and precision of Islamic jurisprudence in safeguarding animal dignity.
