Gelatin, as one of the most widely used additives in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries, has always been the subject of jurisprudential and legal disputes due to the diversity in the origin of production (halal animals, haram meat, religious or non-Islamic slaughter). This study was conducted with the aim of comprehensively examining the jurisprudential foundations related to the halality or prohibition of consuming gelatin. Topics such as the rule of purity, the rule of transformation, necessity, obedience, and the general principles of purity and impurity in Imami and Sunni jurisprudence have been the basis of this analysis. Also, the application of contemporary views of jurists and official inquiries regarding the consumption of imported and pharmaceutical gelatin in unavoidable cases has been examined. On the other hand, examining the gelatin production process from a scientific perspective shows that in many cases, a structural change to the extent of transformation is achieved, which can be effective in purification and halality. This research attempts to provide a clear, documented, and applicable answer to the issue of the hality or sanctity of gelatin in Islamic jurisprudence, using a comparative approach.
